Concept vs. Drive

There is a huge thing that I’ve noticed being in art school. That is that all of our art produced in art school must have a reason for it’s making beyond the drive to make art.

I can’t say that I agree with this idea. I personally feel this deep feeling inside of me that is a need to create and this feeling doesn’t go away until I finally make something.

It is somewhat insulting when I am pushed to give my piece a reason of why I made it and what it means as if I’m trying to make some huge social statement. I make my art for me, for the satisfaction of creating something out of nothing. I feel like that should be enough.
